Chung Il-Young Wins 2020 Election in Yeonsu-gu, Incheon
April 17, 2020
Chung Il-young of the Democratic Party of Korea, a former president of Incheon
International Airport Corp., won the election in the Yeonsu-B constituency in Incheon.
Chung beat two incumbent lawmakers, Min Kyung-Wook of the Future United Party and Lee
Jung-mi of the Justice Party with 41.7 percent of the ballot, Min Kyung-Wook standing at
39.4 percent.
Chung was disadvantaged as compared to the other two candidates at the beginning of the
election race because he had no connection with Incheon. However, Chung was successful
with his first election after focusing on promoting himself as a transportation and economic
expert, emphasizing his 30-year career at the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport,
chairman of the Korea Transportation Safety Authority and president of Incheon International
Airport Corp.
“Finally, ending the era of rough-spoken politics, we are now able to engage in decent
politics and working politics…I want to express my deep gratitude to the residents, and I will
implement a master plan to solidify the status of the international city.” Chung said as he
acknowledged his victory on Wednesday.
He went on to say, “I will do my best for the development of South Korea and Yeonsu-gu,
which are in trouble due to [COVID-19] right now.”
Chung graduated from the University of Leeds in Britain with a Ph.D. in economics and
served as head of the transportation policy office at the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and
Transport, and president of Incheon International Airport Corp.
Chung’s pledges include the creation of new elementary, middle and high schools, the early
launch of the GTX-B route, the construction of Songdo Severance Hospital in 2021, and the
hosting of the second phase of the Incheon Global Campus.
In Yeonsu-gu, Park Chan-dae of the Democratic Party (Yeonsu-A) and Min Kyung-Wook
(Yeonsu-B) of the United Party were elected in the 20th general elections.
